About ‘The Granaries’
‘The Granaries’ has easy access to the road and river systems, making this an ideal base for exploring the Norfolk Broads, Britain's largest protected wetland and third largest inland waterway, with the status of a national park.
The Granaries History in Brief
As far back as the early nineteenth century, the Norfolk Wherries would unload/reload cargoes at this site, before either going up the North Walsham and Dilham canal to Ebbage Mill, or down to the main Broads system. Hop Sack and Malt Shovel cottages are in a building dating back to 1845, with the date of completion still visible on the River Ant side of the property. Many original features remain in these two cottages, including solid wood beams and vernacular architecture.
The premises were acquired in 1982 as a dilapidated boatyard with moorings. In 1987 the brick built grain store building was converted into two holiday apartments, which were converted again in 2003 into the two cottages, Hop Sack and Malt Shovel. In 2000, the indoor swimming pool was built, along with the three cottages Grebe, Coot and Heron.
